Letter Affirming Support of Community Board 9’s Unanimous Resolution from Readers to LPC

RE:  Affirming Support of Community Board 9’s Unanimous Resolution to Extend and Expand the Morningside Heights Historic District

I enthusiastically endorse Community Board 9’s unanimous resolution to extend and expand the Morningside Heights Historic District, and request that the Landmarks Preservation Commission allocate all necessary research resources to formally designate the five areas proposed.

LPC was thoughtful and correct in 2017 to designate the original Morningside Heights Historic District in the southern, mostly affluent neighborhood area to preserve the character and quality of life of the community.

I now request LPC to evaluate districts in the northern Morningside Heights areas that are mostly less affluent, with far higher concentrations of Black and Hispanic residents who are also deserving of designation – a continuing socio-economic living history of traditional middle and working-class families.

As highlighted in the CB9 Resolution, I support designation of the five proposed areas that have all been evaluated against preservation criteria:  embodying special character;  historical importance;  aesthetic interest;  special period architectural style; and special significance in the area of social history.

All of the proposed areas offer to the residential community and visitors alike a sense of place that conveys overwhelming historic character.

I urge LPC to fully appreciate CB9’s resolution, and begin formal study of the proposed areas.

Sincerely,
